I Began Writing...
In 2014, my 3rd year of training, I co-wrote, directed & performed in a one-act two-hander, Benevolence. In the same year, I co-wrote & devised A Play on Words, a comedy sketch show, with Diced Soup Theatre, with whom I also co-wrote, directed & performed in Murder on the Dance Floor, a commissioned murder mystery for The Regency Ballroom in 2015. In 2016, I co-wrote a short skit about the EU, A Small Matter of State, which was submitted for Nottingham's European Art Festival.
In 2017, I completed an MA in Theatre: Writing, Directing & Performance, wherein I wrote my first solo-authored piece, a one-act play, An Absurd Little Bird & my first full-length play - a farce - A Fool’s Game. The latter is in pre-production with Connecting Creatives & will be both my first produced play & the first on their new writing scheme.
More recently, I have ventured into short-form & in 2020 I wrote a series of 5 monologues for a lockdown collaboration project, Message in a Bottle, wherein actors recorded & shared performances of writers' work. I started writing performance poetry in lockdown #1 & my first piece, The Lady with the Laugh, was aired on BBC Radio Nottingham as part of BBC Upload. I made my national poetry debut on BBC Upload Festival ’21 with (Comm)Ode to a Care Worker, which subsequently aired on BBC Radio Derby with an interview about my experiences working in care & mental health.
My first poetry show, Between the Lines – a collection of 6 pieces – was featured on Ashfield Arts Festival, Bulwell Arts Festival & Upbeat Festival ‘21. I was recently placed 3rd in Derby Poetry Festival’s 4th Annual Slam, which was my first competitive performance. I've had 2 pieces published: The Wings of My Life in a collection of poetry & experimental writing by Gold Akanbi; Ballad of a Yard Flower in a Word Walk collection by GOBS Collective for Nottingham Poetry Festival.
In 2020, I began writing a series of children's stories, Adventures of Penny Pinkle, for virtual interactive storytelling sessions, in which there are: A Squirrel's Struggle, A Deer's Dilemma & A Fox's Frustration. You can listen to an audio version of A Squirrel's Struggle here. Audio versions of the other two are coming soon & eventually will be produced into short animated films.
I am currently working on The Dweller, a piece that began as a play but has evolved into a written-devised solo clown show, for which I recently undertook an R&D, produced by Ingenious Fools. I am also in the early stages of developing a new play, A Patchwork Door Hinge, inspired by my experiences working in mental health care.
